Yeast Infection During
Pregnancy
It is normal to expect you will, at some point, have a yeast
infection during pregnancy. There is no need to panic as there
is really not much difference between this infection and a
normal yeast infection. One special consideration during
pregnancy is that the hormone levels are impossible to control.
The symptoms are the same, itchiness, unpleasant odor,
discharge like sour milk.
If you have not had one before and you suddenly experience a
yeast infection during pregnancy, you should consult your
gynaecologist right away. They will be able to check what the
problem is and confirm if it is just a yeast infection. There
is a possibility that there could be other infections present
too and the doctor can treat these as well as the yeast
infection. A yeast infection will itch and it may be red from
rubbing it. If there is any burning feeling when urinating,
make sure you get a urine test as there could be an infection
of the bladder. Be sure to tell the gynaecologist about any
medication you are already on or any creams you have applied.
Although oral medication is commonly used to treat yeast
infection, in the interest of the baby, the doctor will
prescribe external treatments but not pills. Creams or
ointments are the methods to treat yeast infection during
pregnancy. Like any treatment, the creams should be used until
the infection is cleared up and then for a few more
days.
If yeast infection during pregnancy re-occurs, your doctor is
likely to try to assess the cause and may advise a change of
diet. Reducing sugar and introducing berry juices to the diet
can help. Another consideration is the toiletries you may be
using, which may be irritating the area. It is best to use
simple toiletries with no scents in
them.
Yeast infection during pregnancy is not a huge concern for your
future health or that of the baby. However, the baby may get an
oral infection, which you will notice as a
milky appearance in the mouth. Just make sure the baby is
treated in good time so that the infection does not pass
through their system to their genital area as
well.
